UPC_Multimedia. Sinds kort zit ik bij UPC. Ik heb een Thomson TWG850-4U modem ontvangen.
Nu ontdekte ik dat naast het wifi netwerk wat ik geconfigureerd heb, er ook een hidden wifi netwerk zit.
Dit netwerk staat ook in de user interface van de thomson als "UPC_MultiMedia".

Ik vind dit uit het oogpunt van beveiliging geen prettige gedachte want ik kan de settings van dit netwerk niet controleren, dus in principe is dit een potentieel security hole. Volgens mij hoef je zelf helemaal geen netwerk aan te maken, die zit er al standaard op in de configuratie. Juist ja, het hidden network.

Dus enkel de SSID en de passkey invoeren op de clients die je toegang wilt geven en klaar ben je. Deze gegevens staan over het algemeen met een sticker op de modem zelf vermeld. En dat hij wordt aangegeven als een hidden network is juist een stapje beter, als jij met je eigen netwerkinstellingen je SSID wel meestuurt, kan "men" in ieder geval zien dat jouw netwerk bestaat en dat kan nu net de drempel voor onverlaten zijn, om nu eens het 1 en ander te proberen.

Mijn normale volgorde bij het aanmaken van een nieuw draadloos netwerk:
-) basisinstellingen
-) veiligheidsinstellingen
-) clients instellen
-) SSID broadcast uitzetten

Though WPA and WPA2 are by itself pretty secure, Thomsons implementation of generating default values has proven to be flawed. Unfortunately, some ISPs like KPN in the Netherlands are still distributing this router and allowing their customers to use the default (insecure) settings, even on speedtouch.nl[DUTCH!] there isn't any info on this security flaw. Other providers like the internet provider Online (what's in a name? ;) ) distributes a password-locked ADSL modem with the same issue. The BT Home Hub also seems affected (SpeedTouch BTHH, BTHomeHub, BT HomeHub or Home-Hub).
